In 1985, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, or Porsche 951 as it was known in the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany. The introduction of this car was due largely to the impressive success of the normally aspirated 944 which was originally introduced in June of 1981. The 944 was largely based on the body style of the 924, but the four-cylinder engine was derived from the 928's eight-cylinder. The 1985 944 Turbo produced almost 220 brake horsepower (bhp) and reached a top speed of 157 mph.
